When Jesus Made Clay: A Reflection on John 9
Seeing God’s glory in an unexpected miracle
There are moments in Scripture when Jesus does something so unexpected that it invites us to pause and look closer. John 9 is one of those moments. Jesus meets a man who had been blind from birth and instead of simply speaking the healing, He makes clay with His spit, places it on the man’s eyes, and tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam.
John 9:6–7 says, “He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, and said to him, ‘Go, wash in the pool of Siloam.’ So, he went away and washed and came back seeing.” This miracle raises a powerful question: why did Jesus make clay? Why not simply speak healing over the man, as He had done before?
The Question Everyone Was Asking
As people gathered around, including the Pharisees, they wanted to know why this man had been born blind. Their first instinct was to assign blame. They asked whether the man had sinned or whether his parents had sinned. But Jesus answered with compassion and authority: no one was to blame.
God Does Not Make Mistakes
Jesus revealed that the man’s blindness was not a punishment, but an opportunity for the works of God to be displayed. Our Creator does not make mistakes. He created man in His image, and in this moment, Jesus showed that what others saw as a limitation could become the very place where God’s glory was revealed.
Why Clay?
By making clay, Jesus pointed back to the creative power of God. The same God who formed man from the dust of the ground now stood before them in the person of Jesus Christ, giving sight where sight had never existed. The clay was not random. It was a sign. Jesus was showing everyone, especially the Pharisees, exactly who He is.
A Beautiful Reminder for Us
This story reminds us that God can reveal His glory in the very places we do not understand. What looks unfinished, delayed, or impossible to us may be the place where Jesus chooses to display His power. The blind man went, washed, and came back seeing. His obedience met the miracle already prepared for him.
May we trust Jesus even when His methods surprise us. May we believe that He is still the Creator, still the Healer, and still the One who brings sight, purpose, and beauty out of clay.
