That Still Small Voice
“Arise and shine, for your Light has come.” Those words from Isaiah 60:1 came to me in a way I will never forget. Still and small, soft and gentle, yet unmistakably clear. It was the Lord’s voice, His Rhema Word spoken directly to my heart. In that moment, my heart swelled with the warmth and joy of His presence.
Eyes filled with tears, I rustled through the pages of my Bible, to find His Logos Word written in Isaiah 60:1.
I read it aloud, then looked over at Maxx, my rambunctious German Shepherd puppy. This oversized bundle of energy, who was rarely still, was lying calmly with his chin resting on his crossed paws, looking up at me as if he had heard it too.
“Did you hear that Maxx?” I asked. I cannot say whether he knew what had happened, but I knew. I had heard and recognized the voice of my Lord, Jesus—just as He said: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).
He came to me exactly as He promised in Isaiah 30:21: “Your ears shall hear a word behind you saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it’.” His direction was not loud or forceful, but it carried the Authority only He can give. It was personal. It was timely. And it changed the course of my life forever.
Let Me Back Up
At that time, I was walking through a difficult season. I was clinging to the promises God had given me, even when the circumstances looked nothing like what I was believing for. But on that blessed day more than 30 years ago, He spoke to me. He gave me direction. I listened and He lifted me out of the mud and mire, set my feet on solid ground, and established my steps (Psalm 40:2).
Friend, are you walking through a dark season? Are you longing to hear His voice or feel the comfort of His presence?
Hold tightly to His promises. They do not fail. Nothing is too small for His care, nothing is too heavy for His strength, and no one is beyond the reach of the love of Christ. He loves us as far as the East is from the West (Psalms 103:12). Think about that. Not as far as North to South because there is an end at the top or bottom of the globe. But East to West does not stop. It is a full circle around. It never ends.
Be still. Listen. Believe. The same Lord who spoke then still speaks today, and when He says, “This is the way,” you can trust Him to lead you step by step into His Light.
